OSRAM’s Eviyos LED Prototype Revolutionizes Smart Headlights With More Than 1,000 Individually Controllable Pixels

The hybrid LED will make its North American debut at CES 2018

Sunnyvale, CA – The Eviyos prototype, developed by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, is the world’s first hybrid LED. It represents major progress in the company’s quest to deliver the first market-ready, connected, high-resolution LED. When in use, the appropriate pixels are automatically switched off as soon as oncoming traffic is detected to prevent drivers of oncoming vehicles from being blinded. The prototype will be on display in OSRAM booth #3115 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at CES, Jan. 9-12, 2018.

The prototype combines two technologies in one component: A light-emitting chip and individual pixel control electronics. This combination allows the 1,024 pixels of Eviyos, as well as the driver, to be accommodated in a small footprint of approximately 4 mm x 4 mm. The light source has a minimum luminous flux per pixel of 3 lm at 11 mA. Initial prototypes have already exhibited more than 4.6 lm per pixel. Customers can vary the number of hybrid LEDs in their applications and supplement them with conventional LEDs, depending on the requirements.

Eviyos is not only compact and powerful, but also energy-efficient thanks to the precise control and dimmable feature of the individual pixels. The only pixels illuminated are the ones actually needed at the time.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors plans to launch Eviyos at the start of 2020 as part of a separate product family, offering a wide range of possible applications. Eviyos illuminates surroundings in high-beam quality light, while ensuring other drivers and passengers are not blinded either by direct glare or reflected glare from road signs and other objects.
